In the Tanneries of Cairo two industries coexist: the production of gelatine and leather, both from the treatment of animal skins.

The tanneries exist in an undesirable, dirty, smelly and impoverished neighbourhood south of Cairo's Islamic quarter.

The environmental impact is significant. The chemicals involved in the tanning process are not disposed of properly and tons of toxic waste reach the Nile each year.
